I roll the gum around with my tongue, stretching it between my teeth and blowing big, bubbly blobs of saliva. Inside those bubbles, the tiny people struggle to break free, but they're helpless against the sticky surface of the gum. Each bubble pops, and they're lost once again, trapped inside the sticky mess. I stretch the gum to its limit, feeling the strands tug at my fingers as they strain to pull apart. With each bubble that pops, there's a moment of silence before another rushes to take its place. The tiny people inside must be panicking, but all I can think about is the sweet taste of the gum and the excitement of not knowing when the next bubble will burst. And then, without even realizing it, I swallow. The sensation of the gum sliding down my throat is overwhelming, but it's too late now. I can feel the tiny people being pulled into my stomach, their tiny cries muffled by the walls of my esophagus. As the last of the gum disappears into my mouth, I am filled with both satisfaction and guilt. I've just consumed dozens of innocent people, and yet all I can think about is reaching for another piece of gum to satisfy my cravings.
